Waiting
Waiting seems to be the story of my life. But if you've been alive for three and a half decades as well---or more, you'll probably agree, that it's your story as well. The idea of waiting seems particularly difficult when you can no longer see the finish line in the distance, when the travel voucher no longer leads to a specific destination, when dreams become squelched by fear rather than remaining fueled by courage. But as Christians, we must not despair during the waiting process. Psalm 46:10 says, "Be still and know that I am God" and I absolutely love and hate this verse, equally. You see, it's been a theme verse for me for the past several years---one that I have very inadequately embraced. That said, "being still" has become my faith challenge. I am not one who easily sits still. In contrast, I set multiple and most commonly, very unattainable goals, during a matter of minutes that might take someone else a few months or a year to dream up. I write books, that may never see a publisher's desk. I invent ideas for new games. I plan overseas trips that I may never take. I envision non-believing friends and acquaintances bringing revival to their own families and friends. Impossible, yes! All of it! And maybe that's why it's so hard to wait, because I'm a person of action, movement, and zealous enthusiasm. So when God calls me to wait, I want to fight back, challenging, "But God, you need me to get that moving, right?" He gently whispers, "Not yet my child, not now." And the truth is, I can't stand it. I want to send the right emails, take the next few steps, peek around the oncoming bend, and even glimpse into the future through some kind of dream or vision. For now though, I must wait--PATIENTLY, concerning a plethora of areas in my life. But through it all, I know that God is faithful and that He is transforming me into a more peaceful and trusting servant. If you struggle with being still as well, take heart. You are not alone and God is most certainly changing you along the way as well. Share your thoughts here and let us pray for you as we journey together.
